Stress, anxiety, worry, depression are just some of the words that can explain why you feel you are shrouded in darkness. At times it is so difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. To see the end in sight. Times like these are extremely lonely and can compound the stress we already feel. Today we are talking about managing that sensation of having no end to the issues you find hard to cope with. We have three ways that can help you in this endeavour.

Talking can Help

We say this a lot on The Wonderment, but it is true. Talking can help in so many ways. The saying ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ holds a lot of weight. When we bottle up our feelings and keep our worries to ourselves, the grow. Like a children’s book where the villain enters and the shadow lengthens in a dimly lit room, worry, anxiety and stress does the same when unmanaged.

Therefore having a natter with someone you trust can in itself make you feel better. You might not solve your problem, but that connection with your friend has amazing benefits. The release of beneficial chemicals into the body from that connection, where you laugh, cry, vent or just ramble, helps your brain to muffle the noise that stress brings. It dampens it enough to give you respite, which is valuable beyond measure.

Use a Road Map

A road map can hep you pinpoint areas to deal with first. Prioritising the worries and tackling an issue can be overwhelming. This is especially true if they have been left to fester for a while.

Sit with a pencil and some paper and start writing. What is the thing causing you concern? Now, just like when you were at school turn it into a spider graph, draw a circle around the issue. With each line of exploration think about what can be done to manage the situation and your emotions.

How to tackle the problem. What caused the situation? How do you feel? What can you do to help yourself right now? Try to think about what will help you right now – a walk or cup of tea to gain some quiet time and perspective. Perhaps meditation or a chat with a friend. Next steps in managing the actual problem. Are there people you can call? Help or advice from someone who has been there?

Start small and be realistic. Create this road map that can lead you through the tunnel and out the other side.

Take Time for Yourself

This is all important and often the first thing that gets forgotten amidst stress. . You need time to relax, time for your brain to process the world around you and your feelings. You can not effectively manage a stressful situation without finding this time.

It doesn’t matter if you take a bath, go for a walk, read a book or just sit quietly for a time. The point is to practice self-care, remember that you are important and looking after yourself will only help you manage these difficult times.

It can be almost impossible to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Things can seem never ending, immovable and unresolvable. Think about other times when you have felt like this though. Those times have ended and were followed by relief and calm. Do you remember thinking how glad you were it was over? That all that stress and upset had passed? Hindsight is wonderful and a hinderance! We don’t know the future, but experience tells us we can find a way through that darkness. Be kind to yourself and remember that you can be the light that guides you through it.
