Today we are talking with Jamal from Journey about al things mental health and mushrooms. Could they really help boost your mood and improve how you feel?

Please can you introduce yourself to our readers?

mushrooms

I’m Jamal, one of the co-founders at Jrny. A brand dedicated to harnessing the power of functional mushrooms for the neurodiverse community.

What prompted you to begin working on products that help people with ADHD?

I was diagnosed with ADHD in 2023, I opted against taking medication and started to hyperfocus on natural ingredients I could use to manage my symptoms. After trialling, and seeing how much they helped, I wanted others to have the same experience.

Why do you think this is important?

There’s nothing inherently wrong with meds, but I think we need to be clear on the fact that over 40% of those diagnosed don’t take them. When you consider that 85% of all cases are estimated undiagnosed, that’s most people. It begs the question; how do they manage symptoms?

The Shruum, is your brand new Neuro Blend.  It is incredibly delicious and chocolate flavoured, which is an absolute winner in The Wonderment HQ.  Why mushrooms?

mushrooms

Firstly, mushrooms themselves are amazing. I’d advise anyone reading to watch a documentary called, ‘Fantastic Fungi’, it will change your perception. After researching clinical trials, it was obvious that medicinal mushrooms had untapped potential to help with ADHD symptoms, as they can be beneficial for focus, mood, memory and anxiety.

A shake using The Shruum is definitely something we look forward to in the morning and we feel a boost after drinking it.  What are the benefits of using the Shruum to people with ADHD?

A. Intense focus and more motivation to help with executive functioning is a big one. And again, helping us to manage mood fluctuations, feelings of anxiety and short-term memory can make a world of difference. Everything I’ve mentioned will be acutely relatable to anyone with ADHD and it can have a major impact on our life outcomes. So that’s the mission, how do we unleash our superpowers and create the room to reach our potential.

How did you decide on the deep, rich, chocolatey flavour?

I can’t speak for everyone, but as an ADHD’er I struggle with taking pills for example (always forgetting) or pretty much anything that doesn’t give me a little dopamine reward. For that reason, having a product that tasted good felt key as it makes it that bit easier to get it into your routine. Also, I love chocolate!

Do you have any plans to develop more blends?  What focus will they have?

mushrooms

It’s in the pipeline, although for the moment the focus is purely on helping as many people via Shruum v1 as possible. Eventually though, we may try to create more potent blends to help with other neurodiverse differences.

Developing, producing and launching The Shruum, must have been quite a journey.  What coping strategies did you use to manage stressful periods?

I’m still trialling them all the time! Exercise as a pillar has been key, 5-6 times per week is a non-negotiable for me. As is daily cold showers and when I’m really stressed, mediation.

Why do you believe mental health is vital to healthy living?

Ultimately, it impacts every single behaviour of a human being. Good or bad, conscious, or unconscious, our experiences, thoughts and general mental wellbeing will determine which way our life leads, how we treat other. All of it.

When you look at it like that, you realise it’s the most important thing we can prioritise and is worth investing in!

There must have been a lot of research involved in the development of this delectable blend.  Tell us, what is your favourite mushroom and why?

Good question. I’d have to say Lion’s Mane! It’s the obvious choice, but you just can’t beat something that’s proven to stimulate nerve growth in your brain.

The Wonder Collection

The Wonder Self-Care Journal! We believe self-care is vital to great mental health.  What is your go to self-care activity and why?

Hmmm, there’s a few but I’d have to go with exercise. I think it’s the key foundation we all need which then allows you to stack other self-help activities like journaling or meditation on top.

The Wonder Mix Tape! What song/artist do you find uplifting and listening to it/them boosts your mood?

Bakar, OneInOneOut

The Wonder Bookshelf! Can you recommend a book to our readers.  Fiction, non-fiction, feel good or advice giving.  Why did you choose this book?

I love my books. Been very focused on non-fiction over the last decade, but I’d say Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It’s an oldie, but changed my life.

The Wonder Sketchbook! Being mindful is a not just rewarding but can also be a lot of fun.

Drawing helps stimulate the brain and can produce dopamine, improving concentration and making you feel more motivated, as well as being the hormone that lets us feel pleasure.

It doesn’t matter if you are any good at drawing, the point is to be in the moment and enjoy the exercise, just be present.
