It sounds silly doesn’t it? Basic self-care, it should be second nature to us. Sometimes though, in amongst the hectic chaos and stress of daily life, we can forget. In fact, as a rule the first thing that gets overlooked during stressful periods, is basic self-care.

What is Basic Self-Care?

Basic self-care is a myriad of activities that we perform daily or weekly. Some will be inevitably part of your routine already and most likely you’ve done for years. It is the building blocks for caring for yourself, the foundation on which your life is built.

Eat & Drink

Stress, anxiety, low mood and many other physical and mental health issues can cause us to not have much appetite. Sometimes the last thing we want to do is eat when we feel less than ourselves.

So, taking the time to remember to eat is vital. Without food many other complications can arise, not to mention we will lack energy, motivation and concentration to do even the most basic things. Even if you just have a slice of toast and glass of water, it is better than nothing.

Lack of sleep can have an affect on everything in our lives. We can have a less than desirable outlook, attitude and our reactions to situations can be problematic.

Sleep helps us to process our thoughts and feelings, put events into perspective, as well as have the energy to face the day ahead. Getting a good amount of sleep is imperitive to the way in which we function. It is therefore important to minimise distractions and do your best to rest.

Personal Hygiene

Another area of basic self-care is personal hygeine. We do not always feel like taking time to wash our hair, brush our teeth or have a wash every day. Particularly when life is stressful, this area can be extremely easy to overlook.

Making it part of the second nature routine that we carry out every day regardless of the events around us, can help to minimise the chance of forgetting to care for yourself in this way.

Fresh Air

Stepping outside, breathing in some fresh air and soaking up some daylight can be the last thing we want to do when we feel rubbish. At times all we want to do is curl up in bed and binge watch TV or read a book. This is not always a bad thing, but making it a regular occurance is a slippery slope,

Taking time each day to get outside and enjoy the world around us is invaluable. Not only do we get the benefits of fresh air, daylight and nature, we are keeping ourselves connected to the world outside.

This is just a quick run through of some of the things we can forget when times are tough. It is by no means an exhaustive list, nor is it filled with everything you know. It is simply a reminder to keep those things in mind next time life seems hard and look after yourself.
