Winter is here and that means we start wanting to spend more time indoors where it’s warm and cosy. That doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun and do exciting project with the children though. We have a brilliant idea to share with you and you can download the instructions for the kids, for free. Keeping the kids occupied, can really help you all when the weather changes. Those feelings of being stuck inside, the kids bored, being cold and dull, dark days, is no good for your mental health. So, instead get some fabulous ideas ready to keep your sanity and them occupied! Like creating your very own board game.

You Need an Idea

This is the cornerstone of any game, a fantastic idea! Without one, you’ll end up with something that resembles many other games out there.

Get the kids to come up with something exciting. Perhaps a trek through a mysterious jungle after a plane crash, to find a way home. Or, maybe they want to adventure along a strange treasure map found in a duty attic. There’s a chance to zoom across a far and distant land filled with magic and intrigue.

Whatever it is, harness their imagination. Ask them what the world they are playing in looks like? Are there any dangers ahead? What will help the players success?

Gather Stuff

Next you will need some materials. Now, this fully depends on your creativity and budget. Personally, we made a board game using things around the office:

  • cardboard (from a box)
  • thin card
  • paper
  • pens/pencils/paints
  • scissors
  • tape/glue
  • stickers
  • air dry clay
  • dice

Create and Make

Time to get creative!

We have created a handy download with some simple instructions for the kids to use. However, these are just ideas. Who is to say your game should be on a board? Why do you need dice? The opportunities for unique and imaginative ideas here are limitless!

Test Play & Rules

More fun to be had, because now the game is made, it is time to test and play. It may be as you go through this part of the process that changes are made, things added or taken away. That is absolutely fine. Just remember to write down your rules as you go!

Play Your Game

Fantastic!! It’s finished, you could make a box to store it at at this point. However, it is time to play the game! Have a games night, grab some snacks and let the fun ensue!
