It can be hard to look for the wonder in things when life gets in the way, it’s something we are all guilty of and hardly ever prioritise. We should look for that wonder though, that joy or happiness in the every day, it can turn a bad day around, give you a more positive outlook or even just a nudge in the right direction.
Here at The Wonderment, we are big believers in searching out that sense of amazement, (check out our welcome post if you haven’t already to find out more), looking for ways to put a smile on your face and make your day a little brighter. It is not a time consuming endeavour, in fact it is something that with a little practice can be done extremely easily and today we are going to share our top five tips on how to do just that!
Tip One – When Something Makes You Smile
By far and large the easiest of our tips is that when something makes you smile, stop and appreciate it. It could be anything at all, a child laughing, a cute animal, the colour of the sky or something you’ve just read, take a moment and really appreciate why it made you smile.
A great example is you are scrolling on social media and come across a video of baby animals doing something funny, stop. What was it about that clip in particular that made you stop scrolling? Was it because the animals were cute and fluffy? Did it make you laugh?
Tip Two – Make Someone Else Smile
Our next tip is again, super easy to do and takes no time at all. Making others smile is a great tonic, not just for us but the other person too. Take the time to smile at a stranger, perform a random act of kindness or help someone out.
There is an infinite amount of ways in which you can achieve this and no real wrong way, the easiest is to just smile at others. The old adage ‘smile and the world smiles with you’ is true, try it out next time you are shopping or walking down the street.
Tip Three – Think About Why You Like Things
Everyone has their favourite objects, pieces of art, books or dare I say it people. What is yours? Pick it up, take a look at a picture, open the pages or think about that person, whatever you love in this world take a minute to think about why. It is it a piece of art, what about it draws you in, gives you pause and makes you feel good?
I personally enjoy quite a few pieces of art, there is one picture that was drawn by my little person and I adore it for many reasons, it’s unintentionally funny, it well executed and drawn from a place of love. Every single time I look at it, it makes me smile and reminds me of them and who they are.
Tip Four – Savour The Little Things
It does not matter how small an event is, even if it is just a single moment, savour it. These tiny portions of our day may seem insignificant, but when you start to take that time to appreciate them, you’ll notice more and more and will be able to build on each one.
By little, I literally mean anything, perhaps you take a sip of your first coffee of the day and it just tastes so incredible it gives you that warm satisfied feeling, or maybe you are walking past a garden and notice a pretty flower you haven’t before, you hear a song for the first time in a while, whatever it is drink it in and keep that sensation with you.
Tip Five- Keep a Journal
This tip needs a little more commitment on your part, but its worthwhile. Keeping a journal can be fulfilling for many reasons, as many reasons and why you might want to keep one in the first place.
For this tip though, we are talking about a journal that you can write all of your favourite moments in from your day using all of the above tips – things that make you and other smile, appreciating the world around you and why, as well as savouring all those tiny moments that spark a little happiness. Keep a record of them and you’ll notice while you write in your journal, you’ll be smiling and regain that sense of wonder that you had in those moments. Over time that journal will be a moment each day, filled with all the ways you’ve felt happy.
