Why Smiling is Good for Your Mental Health

You know that here at The Wonderment we talk about self-care an awful lot. We have a section full of self-care tips and ideas. Smiling is a simple self-care activity that can have a huge impact on how you are feeling.

There are a number of ways in which smiling is good for you. Smile now. Seriously, do it. Can you feel that uplifting sensation moving through you? Smiling releases endorphins, which are also known as the happy hormones. When you smile they course through you filling you with that sense of joy. It’s quite magical!

The act of smiling also boosts your mood in this way, along with reducing stress and anxiety, as well as improving your blood pressure. There are a whole host of health benefits too, including apparently leading to a longer life, reducing the risk of heart disease, reducing pain and boosting the immune system.

A Smile Goes A Long Way

It is human nature, built into our DNA that we show solidarity with other humans. So, when someone smiles at you, you smile back! The same is true of other facial expressions also. A smile however is incredibly powerful as it can change someone’s day from miserable to something brighter. Those endorphins you get when you smile are released into the person who responds to that smile and so on.

One smile could impact so many people!

Now a good smile is nothing without clean teeth and fresh breath. This is important for self-care too. Looking after our body and mind are vital to being healthy in 2024.
