Everyone likes to find a way to escape the rigors of hectic daily life. Our routines can easily become mundane, be fraught with stress and worry, not to mention busy! Colouring is one way that you can switch off, relax and enjoy a few peaceful, mindful moments.

Isn’t Colouring Just for Children?

The short answer is absolutely NOT! It can be an activity that anyone can engage in and enjoy. If you have children, think about the times that you’ve sat and coloured with them, the peaceful sensation that comes with that is wonderful. Or think back to when you was a child, did you enjoy colouring then?

Colouring books have come a long way from the days when you got them as a Christmas present and filled the images of boats, animals and letters with colour. Now there is a whole genre of them dedicated to grown ups. They come in all shapes and sizes, from botanical designs, intricate animals and even ones that have more adult themes with swear words and nudity!

No more is grabbing a set of pens and your favourite colouring book just for kids!

Why Colouring?

There are so many reasons as to why partaking in a little colouring can benefit the adult mind and provide some much needed relaxation.

  • It can help improve your fine motor skills
  • Increases focus and concentration
  • Help reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improving sleep patterns
  • Aids the mind in relaxing. Providing opportunities for a quiet space in your brain.
  • Boosts brain functions.
  • Allows mindfulness. Being present in the moment.
  • Is therapeutic and can create a meditative state that aids anxiety, stress and even depression.

This is not by any means an exhaustive list, but gives you a little insight as to why colouring can be so beneficial to your mental health.
